Mountain Biking In Buena Vista Colorado: Discover the Midland Trail System

  • Apr 28
  • 4 min read

The Midland Trail System is a choose-your-own-adventure zone for riders ready to build technical skills, ride with intention, and step into the next version of their riding. It’s not about being fearless—it’s about learning how to ride with control, confidence, and curiosity.

Whether you’re newer to mountain biking and ready to progress, or you’ve been riding for a while and want to clean up your technique, the Midland Trails offer the kind of terrain that teaches you something every time you ride.

Midland Trail System: Why It’s So Special

In Buena Vista, the Midland Trail System isn’t just a place to ride—it’s where riders come to build real technical skills.

Built along historic railroad grades from the late 1800s, these trails wind through high desert terrain with views of the Arkansas Valley and the Collegiate Peaks. There’s a rhythm to the landscape—rolling hills, layered rock, and stretches of singletrack that feel both rugged and intentional.

But what really sets Midland Trails apart is how well they support progression.

This isn’t just a place to ride—it’s a place to learn. The terrain naturally introduces you to technical features in a way that feels approachable, not overwhelming. You’ll encounter rocks, roots, tight turns, and small drops, but rarely all at once. Instead, the trail gives you time to process, adapt, and try again.

It’s the kind of system that meets you where you are—and then nudges you forward.

Trail Breakdown: What You’ll Ride

The Midland Trail System is known for its stacked loops and interconnected trails, which means you can build a ride that matches your skill level and goals. These trails also have different route options within a trail based on your skills level with an A line and a B line.

Beginner-Friendly Options

Even the more approachable trails here have a little spice—but that’s part of the magic.

  • Bacon Strips and Midland Trail

These trails offer smoother sections with gentle climbs and manageable features. You’ll still encounter rocks and uneven terrain, but nothing that can’t be worked through with good coaching and pacing.

What to expect: Short punchy climbs, mild technical features, and plenty of opportunities to session sections.

Intermediate Trails (where growth happens)

This is where most riders find their sweet spot.

  • Fist Full of Dollars

A local favorite with a mix of flow, rock features, and tight corners that keep you engaged the entire time.

  • Sausage Links

A great place to link trails together and practice consistency over varied terrain.

What to expect: Rock gardens, quick transitions, and chances to refine body positioning and line choice.

Advanced & Technical Lines

For riders ready to push into more demanding terrain.

  • Unchained and Django

Steeper, tighter, more technical, and requiring focus. These trails reward precision and commitment.

What to expect: Larger rock features, exposure, and technical descents that challenge both skill and mindset.

Technical Skills You’ll Build (Without Overthinking It)

Midland Trails are known for technical singletrack in Colorado, but that doesn’t mean you need to show up as an expert. It just means you’ll have the chance to learn.

Here’s what you’ll start to work on:

Riding Over Rocks

Instead of avoiding rocks, you’ll learn how to ride through them. This means staying balanced, keeping your eyes up, and letting the bike move beneath you.

Small Drops & Roll-Downs

Drops don’t have to be intimidating. We break them down into simple steps—body position, timing, and commitment—so you can approach them with control.

Cornering on Loose Terrain

Midland Trails will teach you how to trust your tires. You’ll practice looking through turns, adjusting speed, and finding grip even when the trail feels unpredictable.

Climbing with Intention

Technical climbing is a skill in itself. You’ll learn how to manage traction, pick smart lines, and keep momentum on uneven terrain.

At VNTRbirds clinics, we take these skills and make them approachable. No jargon, no pressure—just clear guidance, repetition, and support.

Why Riders Keep Coming Back to Mountain Biking in Buena Vista Colorado

There’s something about Buena Vista that sticks with you. Maybe it’s the way the trails challenge you just enough to keep things interesting. Or the way every ride feels a little different depending on your mindset that day.

But more than anything, it’s the community.

Riders here are friendly, encouraging, and genuinely stoked to be outside. There’s no ego, no posturing—just people showing up to ride, improve, and enjoy the process.

And the variety doesn’t hurt either. You can ride the same trail multiple times and have a completely different experience as your skills evolve.

That’s what keeps people coming back. Not just the trails, but the feeling of growth.

Before & After: What Progress Looks Like

We see it all the time at VNTRbirds clinics. A rider shows up feeling unsure about technical terrain. Maybe they’ve been walking sections, avoiding features, or second-guessing themselves on the bike. At the start of the day, they’re hesitant. Careful. Holding back.

Then something shifts.

It might be the first time they ride through a rock garden without stopping. Or the moment they commit to a small drop and land it smoothly. Or simply realizing they can do more than they thought.

By the end of the clinic, they’re riding differently. Not perfectly—but confidently.

One rider recently shared:“I didn’t think I was a ‘technical rider’ before this. Now I feel like I actually understand what I’m doing—and I want to keep going.” That’s the goal. Not perfection—progress.

If you’re ready to build skills, ride more confidently, and take the next step in your mountain biking journey, we’d love to ride with you.
