What makes Lunch Loops trails especially great for all skill levels is the variety. Mountain Biking in Grand Junction: Lunch Loops 101 - what to expect

Your first ride at Lunch Loops isn’t about sending it. It’s about settling in, finding your rhythm, and having fun. The vibe is laid-back, welcoming, and supportive. You’ll see riders of all kinds, from solo adventurers to groups of friends and plenty of people learning for the first time. There’s no pressure to perform, just space to ride.

The terrain is a mix of packed dirt, red rock, and technical features. Trails are well-marked, and intersections make it easy to adjust your route if something doesn’t feel right.

You will climb, but not endlessly. Most rides here combine short climbs with rewarding descents, making it ideal for building both fitness and skills. You can ride for an hour or spend half a day exploring. That flexibility is part of what makes it such a great early-season destination.

If you’re joining a VNTRbirds clinic, we structure the experience so you’re never thrown into something you’re not ready for. We focus on progression, encouragement, and making sure everyone feels comfortable, and appropriately challenged on the bike.

A Simple Gear Checklist

You don’t need a fully dialed setup to ride Lunch Loops. Keep it simple and focus on the basics that help you feel safe and comfortable.

Bring a mountain bike, either hardtail or full suspension. A helmet is non-negotiable. Pack water in a bottle or hydration pack and bring snacks because riding builds an appetite quickly. Wear bike specific shoes or runners with less tread. Add a light layer or two since spring desert weather can shift throughout the day and make sure you have that SPF.

Additional items that are some of our go-tos include full finger gloves, sunglasses, and a small repair kit with a tube, pump, and multi-tool In case your bike needs some love mid-clinic. See the VNTRbirds full packing list.

That’s it. No pressure to have the perfect setup. Just show up ready to ride.

Trail Highlights by Skill Level

One of the best parts of Lunch Loops trails is how easy it is to match your ride to your skill level.

For beginners, start with the lower sections of Tabeguache Trail. It offers a smooth introduction to desert riding with manageable climbs and forgiving terrain. There are also easy loop options near the trailhead that are perfect for practicing balance, braking, and cornering in a low-pressure setting. This is where confidence starts.

Intermediate riders will love Miramonte loop, a VNTRbirds favorite for clinics. It’s flowy with small features that help you practice technique without feeling intimidating. Pet-e-Kes Trail is another great option, offering a mix of climbing and descending with opportunities to refine line choice and control. These trails help you grow into a stronger, smoother rider.

For advanced riders, Free Lunch Trail is the standout. Known for its technical features, drops, and exposure, it’s not for your first day but makes for an exciting goal. Gunny Loop variations also offer steeper and rockier terrain that rewards focus and precision. These trails push your limits and elevate your skills.

The Views and the Experience

Part of what makes Lunch Loops special is the landscape around you.

You’re riding through high desert terrain with expansive views, red rock formations, and big Colorado skies stretching in every direction. It’s the kind of place where you stop mid-ride, not because you have to, but because you want to take it all in.

Riding here feels equal parts grounding and energizing. It reminds you why you got on a bike in the first place. And if you’re riding with VNTRbirds, expect encouragement, shared excitement, and plenty of moments where someone points out a view you might have missed.
