Movement That Matters: Inside VNTRbirds’ Night with AXIS Sports Medicine

There are team nights, and then there are team nights that actually give something back. Your Next Team Builder Should Make You Stronger.

When VNTRbirds started dreaming up a winter gathering for our educators and ambassadors, we knew we wanted more than just beers and high-fives (though we’re always here for both). We wanted something that would make us better—stronger, more aware, and more supported in the bodies that carry us through every climb, descent, and deep powder turn. That’s what led us to AXIS Sports Medicine.

Sixteen of us—outdoor educators and ambassadors—rolled into their Silverthorne space for an evening of movement, curiosity, and, honestly, a lot of laughing. Because it turns out, when you ask a group of mountain athletes to slow down and intentionally move their bodies… things get humbling pretty quickly.

AXIS specializes in Functional Movement Screening (FMS), a system designed to uncover imbalances, asymmetries, and mobility limitations. In simple terms: it shows you where your body is crushing it—and where it might be quietly asking for help. For a crew of hikers, mountain bikers, backcountry skiers, and splitboarders, this felt like unlocking a cheat code to longevity in the mountains. This is movement that matters.

The process was equal parts fascinating and eye-opening. Movements that seemed simple on the surface revealed a lot under the hood. Stability here, restriction there, strength on one side, a little… confusion on the other. It’s not about being “good” or “bad”—it’s about awareness.

Case in point: I walked away feeling pretty proud of my hips (strong, stable, flexible—thank you very much), and immediately humbled by my ankles, which apparently have some work to do. A lot of work. And I wasn’t alone—everyone left with their own mix of “heck yes” and “oh wow, okay” moments.

But that’s the beauty of FMS. It doesn’t just point things out and send you on your way. The AXIS team takes what they see and builds a personalized plan—targeted strength exercises and mobility work designed to support your specific body. The goal? Fewer injuries, better performance, and more days doing what you love, longer.

And maybe the most unexpected win of the night? The energy. There’s something powerful about gathering as a team and choosing to invest in your health together. We cheered each other on, laughed through the wobbles, and walked out not just stronger individually, but more connected as a group.

If you’re part of a team, a club, or even just a group of friends who share a love for moving through the mountains, consider this your sign: plan a night that gives back. Something that supports your body not just in the moment, but for every adventure that follows.

And if you’re curious about your own movement patterns, we can’t recommend booking an FMS screening enough—especially with the crew at AXIS Sports Medicine. It’s one of those experiences that sticks with you—in the best way—every time you step onto a trail, click into your skis, or drop into your next line.
