Find Your Crew on 2 Wheels at VNTRbirds Pedal Parties

I bought a mountain bike because the girls who did it looked so cool! So, of course, I was a little intimidated when I RSVP’d for my first VNTRbirds Pedal Party in October 2021. I wanted to make femme outdoor friends, but had this idea that everyone already knew each other, and I’d just end up awkwardly lurking in the background.

Instead, I felt welcomed right away. Many riders were just like me—checking it out for the first time, nervous but excited! Here’s the thing: if you’re feeling unsure, others probably are too. So just show up, be yourself, and know that you’re all in it together. You might even be the one who helps someone else feel at ease. Fast forward a few years, and Pedal Parties have grown, but they still keep that same vibe—welcoming, social, and downright fun.

What Are Pedal Parties?

Forget the cryptic “A Group,” “C Pace,” and “drop ride” lingo of road cycling or the chill-but-still-cliquey mountain bike rides. Pedal Parties are different.

No-Drop, No-Stress

VNTRbirds Pedal Parties are no-drop, meaning you’re never left behind. Whether you need a snack, a breather, or to fix a flat, there’s no pressure. Each group has a leader who knows the trails and a sweeper who makes sure no one gets left behind. Riders of all levels are supported and can progress at their own pace, making it a perfect environment for learning and connecting. Which brings us to the different ride groups!

Right Group, Right Day

Pedal Parties are announced with a starting location, meet-up time, and 3 groups: Mellow, Sporty, and Spicy. Each group has a pre-planned route with distance and elevation gain so you’re not left in the dark.

Mellow is for... those who are out to enjoy the ride without stressing about pace or technical challenges. Perfect if you’re new, coming back after a break, or just want to enjoy the views at a relaxed pace. Expect lots of breaks to catch your breath, grab a snack, and chat.

Sporty is for... riders who are comfortable on their bikes and up for a moderate challenge. Think fun climbs and descents with the flexibility to pause and regroup when needed.

Spicy is for... those ready to push the miles, pace, and features. This group tackles tougher trails with fewer breaks but still sticks together.

But it’s not strictly about skill level; it’s about where you’re at that day. Maybe you’ve been sticking with Mellow rides but today you’ve got that extra pep in your step. Perhaps you’re coming off a tough week and want a more relaxed ride. Or maybe you’ve been building your skills at a VNTRbirds clinic and feel ready to take on Spicy. Whatever your vibe, you get to choose the group that matches your energy and goals.

A Safe Space to Grow

At a recent Pedal Party, we rode a black trail I’d never felt comfortable tackling despite living right next to it for years. We stopped and looked at features and hyped each other up. Everyone was super into it, so we ended up spending a while on this stretch of trail.

This environment and these kinds of experiences have completely transformed my riding experience. Many more years could have passed before I would have tried the trail. Instead, I can’t wait to ride it again on my own.

Post-ride Magic

I’ve gained way more than new trails—I’ve found my people. Because it’s not “just” a ride - it’s a meet-up. The fun doesn’t stop when the ride ends. Grab a beverage and swap stories with your new friends.

VNTRbirds also partners with organizations for a post-ride talk, such as:
